Program for 7/31: Dick Dowell
Our last speaker in the "Getting to Know Our Officers" series is club treasurer, Dick Dowell.

Dick married his wife, Joyce, in 1971, moving to the Youngstown area from Columbus in the late '70s. He had the intention to join Rotary in 1985, but due to his boss being a member of Boardman Rotary and Poland not having a Rotary club yet, Dick ended up joining the Kiwanis. When his boss transferred, Dick joined the Boardman Rotary in 1988.

Soon after, Dick was called to serve our country, and having not let anyone know he wouldn't be around, was let go from Rotary. After a stint in downtown Cleveland upon his return, Dick found his way back to the area and a member of Boardman Rotary once again.

We thank Dick for his service to our country, and for being a loyal (and persistent) member of Boardman Rotary through the years!

Program #2 for 7/31: God Bless America
Shawn, Fred, Jerry and Dean spoke to the club today about "God Bless America".

  • It was written by Irving Berlin, who wrote the song 20 years before the end of World War I.
  • On her radio show, Kate Smith sang the Irving Berlin song for the first time, introducing it to the country. During World War II, she would sign off her radio show singing "God Bless America"
  • After 9/11, "God Bless America" became a staple at games and events, showcasing our country's patriotism.
We thank them for telling us about the traditions and importance of "God Bless America", and how much it means to our country.
